PHA has joined the campaign for Palliative Care from IASP in collaboration with the World Association of Palliative Care. Upon receipt of the letter from IASP to organize the campaign for palliative care in honor of World Cancer Day, and the fact that Kosovo doesn’t have this service, PHA since at the beginning of this year has started sensitizing the Kosovar public to create and develop this service/care.

On 11 January 2012 Chairman of PHA was a guest on local television “Balkan TV”, where the main topic has been palliative care and pain treatment at patient with cancer. This program was within the ordinary education program. The show lasted an hour and was straightforward.

On 2 February 2012 at the Main Family Medicine Centre in Prizren, PHA has organized a seminar in the framework of the IASP and EACP campaign with the slogan “Life before Death”. There was invited all doctors and nurses in family medicine in the region of Prizren. The announcement of this event was placed on the informative table on January 27 with this agenda:

• Dr. Armend Spahiu – Oncologist – Prevention of cancer diseases
• Dr. Adem Bytyqi – Anesthesiologist – Terminal and Palliative Care
• Presentation of DVD sent by IASP
• Discussion for the possibility of creating the palliative care in the region of Prizren

From IASP we have received two DVDs on January 31, than the association’s leadership has looked at and discussed the possibility of awareness of health and social opinion and starting with the possibility of creating Palliative Care in the municipality of Prizren. Some of this video has been presented at the seminar, and during that time we have discussed and comment on the organization of palliative care and treatment of pain at palliative patients. There was also invited the responsible structures from health directory at the municipal assembly. From municipal officer was requested that in the health plan of Prizren municipality to provide the possibility of creating palliative service.

In the end it was decided that PHA in collaboration with management structures of Main Family Medicine Centre and with health department in municipality to do the project for the establishment of palliative care seeking the help of IASP and European Palliative Care.
